HC Deb 15 December 1943 vol 395 cc1519-20
6. Mr. Lipson

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he can give an assurance that it is the settled policy of His Majesty's Government that after the war no Nazi or Fascist party will be allowed in any of the countries with whom we are now at war?

Mr. Eden

His Majesty's Government have repeatedly affirmed that it is their intention to extirpate Nazism and Fascism in the countries to which the hon. Member refers.

Mr. Lipson

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that he has not answered my question? Can he give an assurance that he will not allow it to arise again in any of the countries with which we are at war?

Mr. Eden

I think that if the hon. Member looks at the definition I have given, he will find that I have answered his question.

Commander Locker-Lampson

May I ask whether James Joyce, "Lord Haw Haw," will be brought to trial after the war?

Mr. Neil Maclean

Will the Foreign Secretary also see to it that Fascism does not arise in any country apart from those with which we are at war?

Mr. Hannah

Ought not that question to be addressed to the Almighty?

Captain Strickland

Would it not be more in accordance with our democratic ideal if each of those countries was encouraged to hold a free and secret ballot to select the form of Government it desired?

Mr. Eden

My hon. and gallant Friend will realise that in this question I am dealing only with enemy countries.
