HC Deb 15 December 1943 vol 395 c1524
15. Major Manningham-Buller

asked the Secretary of State for Air whether he is aware that ancient Pompei was severely damaged by intensive air bombardment in the mistaken belief that a German armoured division was located there although the excavations made this impossible; and whether he will arrange for places of antiquarian interest to be clearly marked on maps supplied to the R.A.F. so as to prevent a similar occurrence in the future?

Captain Balfour

I have made inquiries but am unable to trace the attack referred to. As for the second part of the Question, I regret that it would not be practicable to adopt my hon. and gallant Friend's suggestion.
