HC Deb 07 December 1943 vol 395 cc762-3
35. Mr. Bowles

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he will consider arranging for earlier leave for United Kingdom Forces in the Middle East to be decided by ballot among the troops as has been done by certain Dominion Forces?

Sir J. Grigg

There is not enough shipping available to bring men home on leave, which implies taking them back again when their leave is over. Such shipping as there is after providing for operational needs, is being used to bring back to the home establishment those officers and men who have been abroad for the longest periods. I hope the hon. Member will agree with me that this is the fairest arrangement in the circumstances.

Captain Gammans

Can my right hon. Friend say what are the leave arrangements for the Forces?

Sir J. Grigg

No, Sir, not without notice.
