HC Deb 30 September 1942 vol 383 c753
Mr. Bellenger

asked the Secretary of State for Air what amount of cash a man is entitled to on discharge from the Air Force in lieu of civilian clothes?

Sir A. Sinclair

An airman on discharge receives £2 12s. 11d. if he elects to have cash instead of the suit of civilian clothes and cap to which he is entitled.

Mr. Bellenger

Is my right hon. Friend aware that this figure is less than what the Army pays to a discharged soldier, does not he think it desirable that all the Services should be equalised, and will he therefore take steps to see that the airman gets at least the same as the soldier?

Sir A. Sinclair

My hon. Friend is quiet right. It is slightly less because our contract price for the civilian clothing is slightly less than that of the Army. Actually the Ministry of Supply is now about to place the contracts both for the Army and the Royal Air Force, and therefore I do not doubt that the amount to be paid for the cap and the jacket will be the same in both cases.
