HC Deb 30 September 1942 vol 383 cc770-1
53. Mr. Rhys Davies

asked the Prime Minister which Department of State is now responsible for initiating the prosecution of miners for absenteeism?

The Prime Minister

In England and Wales prosecutions for infringement of the Essential Work (Coalmining Industry) Orders, as recently amended, will be instituted by the Ministry of Labour and National Service, acting in consultation with the Ministry of Fuel and Power. In Scotland such prosecutions will be in the hands of the Lord Advocate.

Mr. Davies

Will the right hon. Gentleman consider whether we have helped the production of coal by prosecuting and imprisoning miners for violating these orders?

The Prime Minister

These questions have been decided by the House, and it is in pursuance of legislation and with Parliamentary authority, that this action has been taken.
