HC Deb 11 September 1942 vol 383 c515
30. Mr. Hannah

asked the Joint Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of War Transport whether he realises the great inconvenience to lorry-drivers and others from the removal of all road direction signs; and will he permit at least some of these to be restored temporarily while a hostile invasion is not imminent?

Mr. Noel-Baker

Yes, Sir, I do realise that inconvenience is caused by the removal of road direction signs. But a decision to replace the signs must depend upon military considerations; and in any case, there is at present a shortage of the labour and materials required. I will, however, consult my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for War, and will write to my hon. Friend as soon as possible.

Mr. Hannah

Is anything known as to how much extra petrol is used by lorries as a result of the removal of these signs?

Mr. Noel-Baker

We should like to make a change, but we must be subject to the decision of the military authorities.
