§ 73. Mr. R. C. Morrisonasked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury what Government Departments, or subsidiary bodies receiving Treasury allocations, place their advertisements in newspapers through advertising agents; and why this service is not entrusted to the Ministry of Information in accordance with the general practice relating to official an-nouncements made by public advertisement?
§ The Financial Secretary to the Treasury (Captain Crookshank)Advertisements on behalf of all Government Departments, including Official announcements made by public advertisement, are placed in the newspapers through the medium of advertising agents. I assume that the hon. Member has in mind the extent to which the Ministry of Information acts as the central agency for placing advertisements with advertising agents. The only exceptions to that arrangement are the Ministry of Food and the National Savings Committee which, for practical reasons connected with their special campaigns, place their advertisements direct. The Ministry of Information is, however, responsible for co-ordinating the requirements of all Government Departments for advertising space.
§ Mr. Rhys DaviesIn view of the fact that the "Daily Worker" has now reappeared, will the Treasury give that paper some advertising?
§ Mr. Glenvil HallCan the right hon. and gallant Gentleman give any idea how much it has cost the country in the way of commission?
§ Captain CrookshankNot without notice.
