HC Deb 08 September 1942 vol 383 cc30-1
61. Mr. Hewlett

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, in view of his recent decision to remove the Purchase Tax from utility clothing, he will now consider extending this concession to the uniforms of officers in the Services?

Sir K. Wood

No, Sir. I am afraid that I could not agree to adopt this suggestion; I do not think that the concessions made for utility clothing would justify a reversal of the decision previously reached with regard to uniforms.

Sir H. Williams

Is the abolition of the Purchase Tax a bribe to induce people to buy utility clothing?
