HC Deb 07 October 1942 vol 383 cc1187-8
2. Mr. John Dugdale

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he will ensure that in all official communications and at all Press conferences, that portion of China north of the Great Wall, is referred to by its correct name of Manchuria, instead of by the Japanese name of Manchukuo, as this latter name is repugnant to our Chinese Allies?

Mr. Eden

In all official communications the term "Manchuria" is used. Departments of His Majesty's Government are being reminded that the term "Manchukuo" should not be used, whether at Press conferences or elsewhere.

Mr. Dugdale

Will the Minister give as much publicity as possible to this to see that the term is not used in the Press?

Mr. Eden

I expect it will be noted.

Mr. Hannah

Is it not a fact that the two districts are not co-terminous and that Manchukuo is bigger than Manchuria?

Mr. Eden

My hon. Friend is giving information.
