HC Deb 06 October 1942 vol 383 c1067
42. Mr. Molson

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power whether he has taken any steps to obtain a reduction in the consumption of coal by miners as part of the national scheme for voluntary economy?

Major Lloyd George

Allowances of coal are made to miners under contracts of employment which differ in this respect not only from district to district, but also very frequently from pit to pit. Modification of the allowances therefore involves questions of some intricacy which I have asked the regional controllers to pursue with the representatives of both sides of the industry.

Mr. Rhys Davies

Is the right hon. and gallant Gentleman aware that to talk of reducing the allowance of coal in mining areas is as ridiculous as suggesting that farm workers should be rationed with turnips?
