HC Deb 06 October 1942 vol 383 c1049
3. Major Lloyd

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he is aware that several Glasgow police constables released for service with the Armed Forces have expressed a strong desire to join the Brigade of Guards and especially the Scots Guards; and why such requests are being refused by the War Office?

Sir J. Grigg

My hon. and gallant Friend will appreciate that it is necessary to maintain a correct balance between the strengths of the various arms of the Service. While, therefore, the wishes of any men to join a particular regiment are given due consideration the needs of each arm or regiment must be the finally determining factor in his posting. It was made clear to the constables referred to that no guarantee could be given that they would be posted to the arm or regiment of their choice but steps are being taken to transfer them to the Guards when this can be done.
