26. Mr. Cluse

asked the Home Secretary whether he will consider issuing an instruction or order to all places of amusement, to the effect that a plan of seating and prices must be exhibited in prominent positions for all performances, together with the number of seats available at the various prices?

Mr. H. Morrison

I have no power to do as my hon. Friend suggests. Licensing authorities can require as a condition of licence that such plans be exhibited, and I understand that the London County Council and a few other authorities have imposed this condition.

Mr. Cluse

Is my right hon. Friend aware that the method adopted by some cinema companies to avoid the latest increase in tax is to abolish cheap seats and increase the number of higher priced seats, so that the public are compelled to pay more in order to attend cinema performances?

Mr. Morrison

I was not personally aware of that, but if my hon. Friend will be good enough to let me have any particulars, I will consider them.
