HC Deb 10 November 1942 vol 383 c2263
65. Mr. W. Brown

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will take steps to ensure that the nursing profession comes within the scope of the Workmen's Compensation Acts?

The Under-Secretary of State for the Home Department (Mr. Peake)

The hon. Member is under a misapprehension in thinking that the nursing profession as such is outside the scope of the Act. In any individual case it depends on whether the nurse works under a contract of service, and from a decision of the Court of Appeal in 1938 it appears that, generally speaking, nurses in hospitals and similar institutions come within the Act.
