HC Deb 20 May 1942 vol 380 cc225-6
40. Captain York

asked the Minister of Agriculture the average size of a dairy herd of cows and heifers in milk upon which he bases the present prices for this product?

The Joint Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture (Mr. T. Williams)

The present prices for milk were fixed after careful consideration of all the information available, including costs and other data obtained from daily farms of varying sizes. The prices were not fixed in terms of any particular size of herd.

52. Captain York

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food how many milk producers are selling milk on wholesale contract?

Major Lloyd George

There are approximately 120,000 producers in England and Wales and 7,500 in Scotland, selling milk on wholesale contracts.

Captain York

Has this figure altered very much within the last six months?

Major Lloyd George
