HC Deb 26 March 1942 vol 378 cc2134-5
29. Mr. Rhys Davies

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he is satisfied that local authorities are implementing the provision of the Shops Act covering the hours of employment of young persons?

The Secretary of State for the Home Department (Mr. Herbert Morrison)

I have no information to the contrary, and such information as I have does not suggest that there is cause for anxiety on this matter.

Mr. Davies

In view of the fact that statements have appeared recently about the deterioration in the physical and mental condition of young persons, would the right hon. Gentleman consider whether it is possible to send a circular to local authorities calling attention to the effective administration of the Shops Act?

Mr. Morrison

I think it would not be quite fair to the local authorities to send such a circular without evidence that they are not implementing the provisions of the Act. If my hon. Friend will send me evidence on the point, I will consider it.

Mr. Kenneth Lindsay

Would my right hon. Friend consult with the Board of Education on the matter?

Mr. Morrison

So far as is relevant, certainly.
