§ 19. Mr. Craven-Ellisasked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of War Transport whether his attention has been 1977 drawn to the profiteering which is taking place in second-hand commercial vehicles; and does he propose to take any steps to remedy this state of affairs?
§ Mr. Noel-BakerI have received no information that leads me to think that profiteering in second-hand commercial vehicles is widespread, though instances are brought to my notice from time to time. In flagrant cases, if it appears that the efficiency of the war effort may be hampered, my noble Friend would be prepared to requisition vehicles offered for sale at unreasonably high prices.
§ Mr. Craven-EllisIs the hon. Gentleman aware that the Motor Agents' Association, at the request of his Ministry, submitted as far back as last November a scheme for trading in these commercial vehicles, and why has that scheme not been adopted?
§ Mr. Noel-BakerI am afraid that I was not in the Ministry last November, but I do know of a few cases in which an unreasonable price was asked.
§ Mr. Craven-EllisWill the hon. Gentleman make himself acquainted with the scheme?
§ Mr. Noel-BakerI certainly will.
§ Sir H. WilliamsWill the hon. Gentleman get into touch with the Motor Agents' Association and make terms on this matter?
