HC Deb 25 March 1942 vol 378 c1991
48. Mr. Cocks

asked the Prime Minister whether, in view of the fact that defeat in total war means the enslavement of the country, instructions will be given that in no circumstances are British generals expected to surrender?

Mr. Attlee

I am confident that British generals will act according to the high principles of their calling without special instructions to do so.

Mr. Cocks

Does not the right hon. Gentleman agree that in this extreme crisis of our destiny the example of Sir Richard Grenville, and even of Leonidas, should be ever present in the minds and memories of our commanding officers?

Mr. Attlee

Certainly.

Sir W. Davison

When are we likely to have any information about the surrender of Singapore?
