HC Deb 24 March 1942 vol 378 c1808
59. Mr. Garro Jones

asked the Minister of Labour whether he will define the industries which are to be asked to advance the war effort by restricting holidays to one week; and whether, having regard to the interconnection between all industries and to ensure equality of treatment, he will consider whether any restriction which may be applied to war industries could be equally applied to all industries and to all grades employed therein?

The Joint Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Labour (Mr. Tomlinson)

The recent announcement on this subject, which was published in the OFFICIAL REPORT on 3rd March, was in general terms, and indicated the Government's view that maximum output over a long period would be assisted if both managements and workers were assured of reasonable holiday breaks, so arranged as to interfere as little as possible with current production. The Government expect that all industries and trades, even though not engaged directly in munitions production, will make the maintenance of the national effort the determining factor in planning their holiday arrangements.
