§ 39. Mr. Thorneasked the Minister of Supply, in view of the shortage of paper, what action he intends taking to prevent such publications as that of the Architectural Association containing 47 pages of the best paper?
§ The Joint Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Supply (Mr. Peat)I understand that the paper for the publication to which my hon. Friend refers, which is the Year Book of the Association, came from the stock of a local printer. The quantity used was about 2¼ cwts. The amount of paper allowed to printers for general printing is now severely curtailed, and my right hon. Friend is looking further into the question of the consumption of paper by publications of this kind.
§ Sir P. HarrisIs not this publication of educational value, and is it not important that architects should be trained in view of the important work that has to be done?
§ Mr. Garro JonesIn view of the stocks of paper outside control altogether because they are pre-war stock, may I ask whether these enormous quantities of paper are to be brought within the control?
§ Mr. PeatI cannot say whether there are vast quantities of paper outside the scope of the Paper Control. What we are dealing with here are small stocks in the hands of a great number of merchants.
