HC Deb 24 March 1942 vol 378 cc1791-2
20. Mr. Brooke

asked the Secretary for Mines whether definite plans have been approved by the Government to secure an early increase in the man-power of the coalmining industry?

Mr. Grenfell

I cannot at present add anything to what was said on this subject by my right hon. Friend the President of the Board of Trade, and by myself, during the Debate which took place on 17th March.

Mr. Levy

How is it possible to increase production or even to maintain it in these circumstances?

Mr. Grenfell

I mad a speech on Tuesday last—

Mr. Levy

I know.

Major Lyons

Will the hon. Gentleman try to take some power in his Department whereby those concerned in distribution will give consideration in proper cases to the great difficulties which arise?

Mr. Grenfell

I agree that there are some very hard cases indeed, at regard to the calling-up for military service of men engaged in coal distribution.
