§ 43. Mr. Rileyasked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies whether compulsory military service has been applied to white inhabitants in our African Colonies on the same lines as in this country; and whether any compulsory military service is imposed on native inhabitants?
§ Mr. Harold MacmillanIn Kenya, Uganda and the Tanganyika Territory and the West African Dependencies, male British subjects and Africans are liable to compulsory military service. In Northern Rhodesia, the Compulsory Military Service Ordinance applies to male 1506 British subjects only, and in Nyasaland, male British subjects are liable to service in the Nyasaland Defence Force. In certain African dependencies, both Europeans and Africans have been called up under the military service Ordinances but my Noble Friend has no detailed information as to the numbers so recruited.
§ Mr. RileyWill natives called up under this Ordinance have the same allowance for dependants as is available to white conscripts?
§ Mr. MacmillanPerhaps the hon. Member will put down a Question on that subject.
