HC Deb 17 March 1942 vol 378 c1308
10. Mr. A. Edwards

asked the Secretary for Petroleum, whether he is aware that the Pwllheli Warship Week Committee have been refused extra allowances of petrol for canvassing during a proposed Warship Week; and whether he will direct all boards throughout the country to follow this example and take steps to prevent the waste of petrol by tanks and other Army vehicles during Warship Weeks?

The Secretary for Petroleum (Mr. Geoffrey Lloyd)

As regards the first part of the Question, the Committee referred to had asked for what appeared to be an extravagant allowance for the week, and, after the usual consultation with the National Savings Committee, a reduced allowance was offered. Any special issues required for tanks or other Army vehicles during Warship Weeks would be within the discretion of the Army authorities.

Mr. Edwards

Is the Minister not aware that most people now realise these so-called savings are not in any sense savings, and is he not aware that it is a disgraceful misuse of war material to use petrol for this purpose?

Mr. Lloyd

The question of general policy is not for me.
