HC Deb 17 March 1942 vol 378 c1325
65. Mr. Brooke

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether pensionable civil servants, whose services in war-time it is desired to retain beyond the normal age of retirement, receive salary in addition to the pension they have earned or whether payment of pension is postponed?

Captain Crookshank

If, on reaching the normal retiring age, an established civil servant retires and is re-employed in an unestablished capacity in an office in a public Department, he may receive while so re-employed only so much pension, if any, as when added to the salary of his new office does not exceed the salary of his former office. If, on the other hand, he continues to serve in an established capacity, he does not qualify for pension until he finally retires.

Mr. Orr-Ewing

Would the Minister consider doing away with the expression "established civil servant"? Does it not give an unreasonable sense of security in the minds of these persons?
