HC Deb 17 March 1942 vol 378 c1307
6. Sir Robert Young

asked the Secretary for Mines what steps have been taken to effect an efficient canteen service at the Boston and Woodpit Collieries in Haydock, Lancashire; and whether he is satisfied that supplies of food are adequate to meet the needs of the men employed?

Mr. Grenfell

The colliery owners have arranged that both collieries shall have canteens providing the type of service desired by the mineworkers, and the Miners' Welfare Commission will defray the initial capital expenditure. The canteens are due to be completed by 31st March, and will be managed by a committee consisting of equal numbers of representatives of the owners and the workers. The Minister of Food makes food available for colliery canteens on the same basis as in canteens for other classes of heavy workers.
