HC Deb 12 March 1942 vol 378 c1184
40. Mr. Bernard Taylor

asked the Minister of Health whether he has now considered the letter from the Evacuation Subcommittee of the Mansfield Town Council respecting the standardisation of billeting allowances; and will he make a statement thereon?

The Minister of Health (Mr. Ernest Brown)

Yes, Sir. Some of the payments mentioned in the letter are not billeting allowances but are subject to the agreement of the parties concerned. So far as billeting allowances are concerned, it will be appreciated that variations in the amounts paid for different classes of person normally reflect differences in the amount of accommodation and service which the householder is required to provide. I hope shortly to be in a position to make a statement on the allowances paid for evacuated children.

Mr. Taylor

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware of the difficulty in securing billets owing to the anomalies existing in billeting allowances?

Mr. Brown

That concerns the whole range of Government Departments.
