HC Deb 12 March 1942 vol 378 c1177
17. Mrs. Hardie

asked the Minister of Labour what is the extent to which English banks have been granted exemption from National Service for their female cashiers and machine operators; and whether the same conditions apply to Scottish banks?

Mr. Bevin

Under an arrangement made in consultation with a committee representing the clearing house banks, female cashiers and machine operators who were so employed in such banks at the date of their registration will not, for the present, be withdrawn. There is no corresponding committee representing the other banks, and in the case of those banks, including the Scottish banks and the Bank of England, the arrangement is that they submit applications for the deferment of calling-up or retention of their female employees to the Treasury, who advise my Department upon the appropriate action to be taken.
