§ 9. Mr. Keeling
asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that the permanent turn-up of men's and women's trousers is not used in Service and civilian uniforms, serves no useful purpose and wastes cloth; and whether he will issue an Order prohibiting it?
§ Mr. Dalton
I am taking steps, in consultation with representatives of the trades concerned, to eliminate the wasteful use of materials and labour in the manufacture of clothing. My hon. Friend's suggestion will certainly be borne in mind.
I hope that my right hon. Friend in the meantime is not having any trousers made for himself with permanent turn-ups?
§ 10. Mr. Parker
asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that persons employed on oily operations in the engineering and other industries rapidly wear out their footwear; and what steps he is taking to meet the needs of this class of person?
§ Mr. Dalton
Trade unions representing workers in engineering or other industries whose normal ration is insufficient to cover their essential clothing and footwear should submit to the Board of Trade, through the Trades Union. Congress, full information about their special needs. All such claims receive careful consideration.
