HC Deb 05 March 1942 vol 378 cc792-3
30. Mr. Vernon Bartlett

asked the Secretary of State for India whether the Viceroy will, in future, convene informal Press conferences at regular intervals with responsible representatives of Indian and British newspapers, in order to encourage full discussion of the problems confronting India?

Mr. Amery

I can assure my hon. Friend that the Viceroy and the Government of India are anxious that the Press in India should be given all possible information and guidance. The recent creation of a portfolio of Information and Broadcasting is indicative of the great importance attached to the matter.

Mr. Bartlett

While appreciating that reply, would not that be a suggestion worth putting up to the Viceroy—that he should hold Press conferences similar to those held by President Roosevelt at the White House?

Mr. Amery

I shall be glad to pass on that suggestion.
