HC Deb 05 March 1942 vol 378 cc790-1
28. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Secretary of State for India, whether he has any further statement to make respecting the political situation in India; and whether His Majesty's Government intend to announce any comprehensive proposals in the near future?

Mr. Amery

I have no further statement to make at present, but it is hoped that the views of His Majesty's Government may be made public in the near future.

Mr. Sorensen

Does not the right hon. Gentleman appreciate that there is considerable public feeling on this matter, and is it not time that we had some precise statement when a Debate can take place in this House on this important question?

Mr. Amery

Yes, Sir, that is fully appreciated.

Mr. Pethick-Lawrence

May we expect that a statement is likely to be made next week?

Mr. Amery

That is not for me to decide.

Mr. Shinwell

Is there no one else on the Front Bench? May I ask the right honourable Gentleman the Leader of the House whether, in view of the urgency of the matter, he can make a statement?

The Lord Privy Seal (Sir Stafford Cripps)

If I am given notice of that question, I will attempt to answer it.

Mr. Shinwell

Surely, the ability of my right honourable and learned Friend should enable him to do so now.
