22. Mr. Hannah

asked the Under-Secretary of State for War why Wolverhampton Forces Social Club, which has far larger accommodation than any others in the town, is graded B instead of A to the detriment of its work; and will he take steps more fully to recognise the service that it is rendering?

Mr. Sandys

The grading of canteens is decided by General Officers Commanding-in-Chief of Commands on the advice of District Canteen Committees. Although the work of this particular canteen is much appreciated, I do not consider that there are sufficient grounds for interfering with the decision of the Commander-in-Chief.

Mr. Hannah

Is the War Office aware that there is a widespread feeling in Wolverhampton that there is some queer sort of prejudice against this canteen?

Mr. Sandys

I am not aware of that.

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that this particular canteen is a purely private organisation, carried on by private subscription and by a volunteer staff, that hitherto it has been possible for a member of the Forces accompanied by his wife to obtain light refreshment there, and that now by this interdiction on the part of the War Office, this family amenity has been terminated; and will he consider relaxing the regulation to meet the circumstances?

I recently gave the hon. Member for Bilston (Mr. Hannah) an answer on that subject, of which I will send my hon. Friend a copy.

But it was unsatisfactory.
