HC Deb 30 June 1942 vol 381 c29
49. Commander Sir Archibald Southby

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the total cost to the Exchequer of the subsidy paid to civil servants now serving with His Majesty's Forces?

The Chancellor of the Exchequer (Sir Kingsley Wood)

No, Sir. The payments of balance of civil pay in question have never been separately accounted for, and I regret, therefore, I have not this information.

Sir A. Southby

Would not my right hon. Friend consider it wise that this information should be obtained in view of the differentiation which now exists between men called up from the Civil Service and men called up from other walks of life?

Sir K. Wood

I do not think that question arises; the balance is made up irrespective of rank.
