§ 39. Mr. Thorneasked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of War Transport whether he can give any information about the 90 single-deck motor-omnibuses in the West and East Ridings of Yorkshire being converted to carry more passengers?
§ The Joint Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of War Transport (Mr. Noel-Baker)The seating in 95 single-decked omnibuses in the West and East Ridings of Yorkshire has been re-arranged in order to permit the carriage in each vehicle of between 20 and 30 standing passengers. This conversion has been effected in response to an appeal made by my Noble Friend to operators of Omnibus Services throughout the country. My Noble Friend has asked operators to convert as many single-decked vehicles as possible which are working on appropriate routes, provided they are mechanically fit. In selecting routes and vehicles. Regional Transport Commis- 1966 sioners keep in close touch with the local officers of the Transport and General Workers' Union, whose co-operation has-been most helpful.
§ Mr. LeachWill the Minister be able to break the restriction which now exists with regard to the width of road vehicles of this character so as to facilitate the acquisition of whatever is on the market?
