HC Deb 24 June 1942 vol 380 cc1955-6
19. Mr. Hannah

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Works and Buildings, whether, in rebuilding the House of Commons, he will consider so enlarging the Chamber as to include the space occupied by the old Division Lobbies, new ones being provided over arcades to be constructed in the adjacent courts?

Mr. Hicks

I am grateful to the hon. Member for his suggestions, which will be borne in mind when plans for rebuilding the House of Commons are under consideration. I would, however, refer to the Reply given by the Prime Minister on 19th June, 1941, to the hon. and gallant Member for West Leeds (Major V. Adams) in which he indicated the desirability of reconstructing the Chamber with only minor alterations in its size, shape or character.

Mr. Hannah

Would it not be an encouragement to Members to attend better if they were sure of comfortable seats?

Mr. Thorne

Have any opportunities been offered to the various architects to submit designs for the new House?

Mr. Hicks

No, Sir, not at the moment.
