HC Deb 23 June 1942 vol 380 cc1818-9
Mr. Molson (By Private Notice)

asked Mr. Speaker whether he will arrange for Parliament to practise economy in fuel by discontinuing the artificial heating of the Palace of Westminster which has been continued up to 17th June, and reducing the number of electric lights kept burning by day.

Mr. Speaker

The regulation of the heating and lighting of the Chamber, and those parts of the Palace of Westminster reserved for the use of hon. Members, falls within the responsibility of the Serjeant at Arms, and the Serjeant at Arms consults, as far as he can, the convenience of Members generally. This is not an easy matter, as opinions are apt to vary here as elsewhere about the ideal temperature, nor does the thermometer necessarily conform to the calendar, as the hon. Member seems to suggest. If the hon. Member has any suggestions to make for improvements in economy of fuel here, he can count on their receiving due consideration, if he will bring them to the notice of the Serjeant at Arms Department.
