§
Ordered,
That, notwithstanding the practice of the House, the Consolidated Fund (No. 3) Bill may be considered in Committee immediately after the Bill has been read a Second time."—[Sir Stafford Cripps.]
§
Motion made, and Question proposed,
That the Proceedings on the Motion relating to a National Scheme of Family Allowances be exempted, at this day's Sitting, from the provisions of the Standing Order (Sittings of the House)."—[Sir Stafford Cripps.]
§ Mr. Greenwood (Wakefield)May I ask the Lord Privy Seal the purpose of suspending the Rule, and how long the House is liable to sit?
§ Sir S. CrippsWe propose to suspend the Rule for the Debate on family allowances to meet what we believe to be the general wishes of the House. The Debate will begin after we have passed the Consolidated Fund (No. 3) Bill through its remaining stages. I suggest that for the convenience of the House we should endeavour to conclude the Debate about two hours later than the usual time. As I am informed that many hon. Members wish to catch Mr. Speaker's eye, I hope they will be able to take part in the Debate owing to the shortness of speeches of other hon. Members.
§ Question put, and agreed to.
