HC Deb 10 June 1942 vol 380 c1043
26. Mr. Riley

asked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies what welfare schemes have now been put into operation in the West Indies under the Colonial Development Act?

Mr. Harold Macmillan

Up to date 80 schemes under the Colonial Development and Welfare Act have been made, involving assistance amounting to a total of £947,179 to the West Indian Colonies. As I said in reply to a Question by my hon. Friend on 21st May, a schedule of all the schemes which are in operation under the Act will be included in a report which my Noble Friend hopes to issue shortly.

Mr. Riley

Are any of the schemes referred to now in operation? If not, how soon will they start?

Mr. Macmillan

It depends upon what is meant by operation. If you mean that a railway scheme is in operation when a railway has been completed, in that sense it is not in operation, but if you mean when a railway is being built, then in that sense it is in operation.
