HC Deb 10 June 1942 vol 380 c1052
42. Mr. Hannah

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Works and Buildings whether any plans exist for rebuilding the House of Commons; what method will be adopted to choose the architect; and whether it will be possible to preserve any of the calcined stonework as a memorial of the present age?

The Joint Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Works and Building (Mr. Hicks)

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply given on 4th June to the hon. Member for Maidstone (Mr. Bossom). In regard to the second part of the Question, it would, I fear, be premature, at this stage to consider the method of selecting the architect. I am grateful for the suggestion made in the last part of the Question which will be borne in mind when plans for the reconstruction of the Chamber are under consideration.

Mr. Hannah

Is it not a fact that the fire has in some respects rather improved the work of Barry?
