HC Deb 10 June 1942 vol 380 cc1039-40
20. Mr. Creech Jones

asked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies whether the names of the Colonial Research Advisory Committee can now be made known; and what large pieces of research are in progress or being visualised?

Mr. Harold Macmillan

The members of the Committee will be as follow:

  • Lord Hailey, Chairman.
  • Sir Edward Appleton, Secretary to the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research;
  • My hon. Friend the Member for Cambridge University (Professor A. V. Hill), Secretary of the Royal Society;
  • Sir Edward Mallanby, Secretary of the Medical Research Council; and
  • Dr. W. W. C. Topley, Secretary of the Agricultural Research Council.
As regards the second part of the Question, the war has restricted the amount of major research being carried out; but it will be one of the first tasks of the new Committee to survey the field and to make recommendations for the future.
