HC Deb 29 July 1942 vol 382 cc507-8
50. Mr. Gallacher

asked the Minister of Production whether he has considered the letter sent to him by the hon. Member for West Fife about the building of a factory associated with the Vestey interests in the North of England which will have no value so far as the war effort is concerned; and what steps does he propose taking in the matter?

Mr. Lyttelton

Yes, Sir. The erection of the factory was authorised because it will produce a substitute for an important material, which is in short supply, and which is immediately required for essential war uses.

Mr. Gallacher

Is it not the case that this represents a tentacle of that great Vestey monopoly, which is stretching out to take possession of a substitute already being produced by a small firm to which the Government refuse to give any support?

Mr. Lyttelton

No, Sir. That is not the case.
