Mr. Creech Jonesasked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies what Regulations to secure fair remuneration and proper conditions of employment have been made in Nigeria arising out of the scheme of industrial conscription adopted there, particularly for work in the tin-mines; and whether adequate arrangements for inspection and welfare have been made and labour inspectors appointed?
§ Mr. Harold MacmillanSubsistence and free transport to and from the minefields have been provided; also a reception camp, where free meals are given. Prior medical examination will be carried out. Wages and conditions are the same as for voluntary labour on the mines. Free housing is provided and free medical facilities are available. Further welfare measures are being arranged. An administrative officer has been posted to supervise general welfare. Health conditions are inspected by the medical department.
