§ 39. Mr. Parkerasked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Works and Planning whether he is aware that the lake in St. James's Park has become noxious; that there are many firemen in London who would be willing to drain and cleanse the lake; and whether he will take steps to have this done so that the park can be fully enjoyed by those taking their holidays at home?
§ Mr. HicksI am grateful to the hon. Member for his suggestion, but as the water of the lake supplies the auxiliary fire mains in the Whitehall area, I do not feel that we can run the risk of having the lake drained and cleaned, a process which would take several weeks. I have, however, arranged for the vegetable growths, which are responsible for the unpleasant odour, to be removed and the top two inches of water to be drained. This will be repeated as necessary throughout the summer.
