HC Deb 15 July 1942 vol 381 cc1209-10
17. Mr. Creech Jones

asked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies whether any considerable road programme is in execution, or being contemplated, in the East African dependencies?

Mr. Harold Macmillan

Numerous and substantial road works are at present being earned out in various parts of East Africa.

Mr. Creech Jones

Will my right hon. Friend consider whether a real programme of work can be put in hand, in view of the desperate need in East Africa, particularly now when there is a large reservoir of labour available through the Italian prisoners?

Mr. Macmillan

My reply was purposely somewhat evasive. There are subjects on which it is wise to be specific and subjects—and this is one—on which at the moment it is wise not to be too specific.
