HC Deb 15 July 1942 vol 381 cc1233-4
53. Mr. Burke

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food what steps he is taking to induce local authorities to establish British Restaurants when local organisations have pointed out the need for these and appealed for their establishment without any response?

Mr. Mabane

I would refer my hon. Friend to the answer given to the hon. Member for Rugby (Mr. W. Brown) on 17th June.

Mr. Burke

In cases where local authorities take no action in spite of an obvious demand, has the Ministry any power to intervene?

Mr. Mabane

The Ministry has power to require the establishment of British Restaurants, but so far persuasion has always been successful in securing their establishment. I think that there have been only two cases in which the Minister has had to make a direct approach, and in both those cases the results were satisfactory and Restaurants were opened.

Mr. W. Brown

How is the hon. Gentleman getting along with Llandudno now?

Mr. Mabane

Very well, I think.
