HC Deb 14 July 1942 vol 381 c1062
25. Major Braithwaite

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power whether he will make arrangements so that farmers in isolated districts can secure their coal supplies for the winter now?

The Minister of Fuel and Power (Major Lloyd George)

Stocking for the winter is being encouraged so far as supplies permit, and local fuel overseers have been instructed to give favourable consideration to applications for licences from isolated premises such as farms where long haulage is involved.

Major Braithwaite

Is the right hon. and gallant Gentleman aware that many of these places are quite impassable in the winter and that it has been customary to get fuel into the farms and the villagers' cottages during the summer months, and that it is imperative that definite steps should be taken before it is too late?

Major Lloyd George

That can be done in the cases to which the hon. and gallant Gentleman refers by application to the local fuel overseer.

Major Braithwaite

Will the right hon. and gallant Gentleman take steps to see that the local overseers do something instead of talking about it?

Major Lloyd George

Perhaps the hon. and gallant Gentleman will tell me of cases where local fuel overseers are not doing it.

Major Braithwaite

I certainly will.
