HC Deb 08 July 1942 vol 381 cc775-6
15. Mr. Riley (for Mr. Muff)

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of War Transport whether he is aware that on board the ss. "Arundel Castle" there is inadequate sanitation, shortage of fresh water, inadequate laundry provision and overcrowding; and will he remedy the shortcomings and prevent a possible outbreak of disease?

Sir A. Salter

Certain defects in sanitation developed during the last voyage in one section of the ship. These were reported to be mainly due to misuse, and steps were taken to prevent a recurrence of them. There was also a complaint as to the water supply and appropriate measures have been taken. All reasonable precautions are, I am informed, taken to safeguard the health of those on board.
