HC Deb 08 July 1942 vol 381 c760
31. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies whether domestic servants in Nigeria were included in inquiries made regarding the high cost of living; and whether he will make representations to the Nigerian Government to ensure an improved status for domestic servants, a free warrant to their homes, house allowance when European quarters do not accommodate and travelling allowances when accompanying their employers?

Mr. Harold Macmillan

The Lagos Committee is to consider the adequacy or otherwise of the rates of pay of labour and of African Government servants in relation to the present cost of living. I am not sure whether the review includes domestic servants or not, but I am making inquiries.

Mr. Sorensen

Will the Minister inform the House whether domestic servants are included?

Mr. Macmillan

Yes, Sir, as soon as I know.
