HC Deb 07 July 1942 vol 381 c625
21. Major Milner

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Economic Warfare whether continued supplies of petrol are being made to Spain; and what precautions are being taken, or undertakings obtained, to ensure such supplies are not misused?

Mr. Foot

In agreement with the United States Government navicerts have been issued for the shipment to Spain of certain limited quantities of oil. In 1940 the Spanish Government undertook not to allow the export of petroleum products from Spain, and His Majesty's Government have no reason to think that this undertaking has not been kept. Moreover, an oil expert is attached to the United States Embassy at Madrid, and one of his functions is to satisfy himself as to the use of all oil imported into Spain.

Major Milner

Does my hon. Friend receive information from this official?

Mr. Foot

We, of course, receive reports from our own representatives in Madrid, and I have no doubt that information received by this United States official will be made available to us.

Major Milner

Is my hon. Friend satisfied that no misuse is being made of this petrol supply?

Mr. Foot

Yes, Sir.
