§ 35. Brigadier-General Clifton Brownasked the Minister of Labour whether, in country districts, men already enrolled in local fire service can be called up by the National Service officer for Home Guard duties as well?
§ Mr. TomlinsonAccount is taken of the circumstances in each case, but it is not possible to make it a general rule that men enrolled by a local authority for fire guard duties are not to be called up for the Home Guard. If so called up, a man is no longer liable for compulsory fire guard duties, and so cannot be required to perform both forms of duty simultaneously.
Brigadier-General BrownDoes not the hon. Gentleman realise that at this time of the year in country districts there is greater danger from fires in most districts than from invasion, and will he see that the fire services in country districts are able to do their duty now?
§ Mr. TomlinsonI will see that the hon. and gallant Gentleman's Question is brought to the notice of my right hon. Friend.
