HC Deb 01 July 1942 vol 381 c204
39. Sir William Jenkins

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of War Transport whether any action is being taken to consider the demand made for the Severn Bridge scheme, or any alternative scheme, to meet the needs of the South Wales industries and the demands of the West of England for improved transport facilities between the West of England and South Wales in general; and is he aware that South Wales is pressing for such improvements?

Captain McEwen

A Bill for the construction of a bridge at English Stones was introduced in the House in 1935. It embodied financial proposals which were acceptable both to the Treasury and to the Local Authorities concerned. It was, however, rejected in Committee. My hon. Friend would be glad to consider any similar or new proposals for the crossing of the River Severn which may be submitted by the appropriate Highway Authorities. My hon. Friend will understand that it would not be practicable to start construction on any such scheme during the war.

Sir W. Jenkins

Are any steps being taken to have this work carried out immediately after the war?

Mr. Magnay

On a matter of procedure, Mr. Speaker, may I ask you whether this House is being treated with proper respect when someone deputises for the Minister concerned and cannot answer supplementary questions?
