HC Deb 29 January 1942 vol 377 c910
27. Mr. Edmund Harvey

asked the Home Secretary whether he has given further consideration to the adverse effects of the discontinuance of educational classes in prisons on the large number of young prisoners at present in prison; and whether steps are being taken to restart classes for young prisoners wherever this is practicable?

Mr. H. Morrison

I am glad to say that it has become practicable to re-start evening classes for young prisoners at some prisons, and physical training and other activities in the evenings at other prisons. As my hon. Friend will appreciate, these facilities are necessarily on a more limited scale than before the war, but there is no failure on the part of the prison authorities to recognise the desirability of making such arrangements so far as war conditions permit.
